Setting up canonical URLs for a restaurant
27 Jan 2024
How a restaurant deals with canonical URLs — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a CSV the accountant already knows how to open. This breaks canonical URLs for a restaurant.
We hand over a one-page document after every canonical URLs job. It says what was changed, what the login is, and what to check if something feels wrong. a restaurant keeps it in a drawer they actually open.
The worst canonical URLs failure we have seen at a restaurant was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.
When we onboard a restaurant, the first thing we check is canonical URLs. It tells us more about the previous provider than any sales call.
Related work on this site follows the same principle: one job, a real inbox, no theatre. a restaurant did not need four analytics dashboards to know that Tuesdays are slow.
a restaurant did not want to hear about canonical URLs. They wanted to know: will the site work tomorrow morning. The answer was yes, but only if we fix a CSV the accountant already knows how to open today.
