certificate renewals for a hardware store

13 Feb 2026

How a hardware store deals with certificate renewals — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a 2 MB photo in a 320-pixel slot. The certificate chain breaks for a hardware store.

We deployed a fix for certificate renewals at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.

We document certificate renewals in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a hardware store can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.

After fixing certificate renewals, we added a monitoring alert. If the record changes or the certificate approaches expiry, both we and a hardware store get an email. No surprises.

Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a hardware store has not had downtime since we took over certificate renewals. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.

Instead of migrating certificate renewals all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.

The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add certificate renewals with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.
