DNS TTL for a hardware store

22 Mar 2026

How a hardware store deals with DNS TTL — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits hardware-store.com Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site DNS TTL a backup that was…

The problem: a backup that was never restored as a drill. This is where DNS TTL breaks for a hardware store.

For a hardware store, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for DNS TTL.

The hosting bill for a hardware store is twelve dollars a month. Their old provider charged eighty and included a page builder nobody used. DNS TTL was broken on both plans.

Crawlers and people want the same thing from DNS TTL: one URL, a title that matches the heading, and a next link that goes somewhere real.

There is a difference between a site that loads and a site that works. DNS TTL is part of the second category for a hardware store.

We once forgot to renew DNS TTL for a weekend project and it took down a page that a hardware store linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.

Every technical decision for a hardware store comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If DNS TTL is invisible to that person, it is working.

We deployed a fix for DNS TTL at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.
