Setting up domain mailboxes for a plumber
24 Jun 2024
How a plumber deals with domain mailboxes — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a tag manager container with leftover pixels. The domain mailboxes check fails for a plumber.
a plumber did not want to hear about domain mailboxes. They wanted to know: will the site work tomorrow morning. The answer was yes, but only if we fix a tag manager container with leftover pixels today.
The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add domain mailboxes with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.
a plumber did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.
We moved domain mailboxes for a plumber to a provider that supports DNSSEC. It added five minutes to the migration and closed a class of attacks they did not even know about.
Fixing domain mailboxes cost less than the lunch meeting where a plumber decided to wait another quarter. Waiting is never free.
We do not start with a platform when handling domain mailboxes. We write down who types what, who gets the mail, and what must not get lost. That list is always shorter than a vendor pitch deck.
