9 May 2024

How a language school deals with domain transfers — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits language-school.c… Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site domain transfers a PDF that sales…

The problem: a PDF that sales cannot find. This is where domain transfers breaks for a language school.

Before you touch domain transfers, take a screenshot of the current state. Half of our emergency calls come from people who cannot remember what was there before the change.

We document domain transfers in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a language school can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.

A phishing page copying a language school appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that domain transfers was set up correctly on the real site.

We told a language school that a PDF that sales cannot find was a ticking clock. They agreed to fix it the same week — which is rare. Most clients wait until it actually detonates.

Automate domain transfers if you can. If you cannot, write a quarterly reminder in a calendar that someone actually checks. a PDF that sales cannot find is what happens when nobody does either.

Our own site had a PDF that sales cannot find for three days before a colleague noticed. We added it to the pre-launch checklist the same afternoon.
