Setting up domain transfers for a marina
21 Oct 2025
How a marina deals with domain transfers — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a 404 that still returns 200. This is where domain transfers breaks for a marina.
We checked the WHOIS for a marina and found the domain was registered under a former employee. Transferring it took more time than fixing domain transfers.
Every CMS update brings a small chance that domain transfers breaks. For a marina, we pin versions and test upgrades in a staging copy before touching production.
We check domain transfers for a marina once a quarter. It takes five minutes and has caught two problems in the past year. Both would have caused downtime within a week.
We document domain transfers in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a marina can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.
a marina did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.
A static site for a marina does not need a CDN, a build pipeline, or a container. It needs correct domain transfers and a host that stays online.
We keep a playbook for domain transfers. Step one is always the same: pull the live record with dig, compare it to what the admin panel shows, and fix the mismatch.
