How a small hotel should handle domain transfers

9 Nov 2025

How a small hotel deals with domain transfers — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits small-hotel.com Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site domain transfers a calendar they…

The problem: a calendar they already pay for. This is where domain transfers breaks for a small hotel.

We rotate API keys for domain transfers annually. a small hotel did not see the point until we showed them the access log: the old key had been used from an IP in a country nobody on their team has visited.

The owner at a small hotel asked why domain transfers matters. We showed them the error page their customers see when it breaks. That ended the conversation.

Half the meeting with a small hotel was explaining what domain transfers is. The other half was agreeing that a calendar they already pay for should have been fixed a year ago.

Complexity is the enemy of uptime. a small hotel had three layers of proxy in front of a site that gets two hundred visits a day. We replaced it with a static page and correct domain transfers.

After fixing domain transfers, we added a monitoring alert. If the record changes or the certificate approaches expiry, both we and a small hotel get an email. No surprises.
