HTTP to HTTPS: a field note from a florist
26 Apr 2024
How a florist deals with HTTP to HTTPS — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a lastmod stamp that never changes. The certificate chain breaks for a florist.
Nobody at a florist could remember who had configured HTTP to HTTPS. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.
Early on we tried to automate HTTP to HTTPS for a florist with a cron job. It ran as root, silently overwrote a manual change, and took down their mail. Lesson learned.
There is a difference between a site that loads and a site that works. HTTP to HTTPS is part of the second category for a florist.
The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add HTTP to HTTPS with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.
Half the meeting with a florist was explaining what HTTP to HTTPS is. The other half was agreeing that a lastmod stamp that never changes should have been fixed a year ago.
