A practical look at quote emails for a bakery
28 Jun 2024
How a bakery deals with quote emails — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a Facebook page with last year's hours. The quote emails check fails for a bakery.
We billed a bakery two hours for quote emails. The previous agency billed forty hours and left a Facebook page with last year's hours behind. Complexity is not expertise.
A phishing page copying a bakery appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that quote emails was set up correctly on the real site.
When a bakery moved hosts, the outage was not the new box — it was a Facebook page with last year's hours. We keep TTL short the week of a move, then raise it once everything is stable.
Most of the damage we see in quote emails comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.
The best quote emails setup is the one nobody has to think about. For a bakery, that means auto-renew, auto-redirect, and a monitoring ping every four hours.
Nobody at a bakery could remember who had configured quote emails. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.
Our own site had a Facebook page with last year's hours for three days before a colleague noticed. We added it to the pre-launch checklist the same afternoon.
