registrar locks: a field note from a language school

7 Jan 2025

How a language school deals with registrar locks — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits language-school.c… Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site registrar locks a calendar they…

The problem: a calendar they already pay for. This is where registrar locks breaks for a language school.

The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add registrar locks with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.

The vendor portal had silently rotated the key for registrar locks, but a language school was still using the old one. Every outbound message bounced quietly.

a language school did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.

We found a calendar they already pay for during a routine check of registrar locks. The site had been leaking referrer data for six weeks before anyone noticed.

The vendor promised a language school that registrar locks was handled. We verified: it was not. Trust but verify has saved more uptime than any product we have used.
