Why XML sitemaps matters for a marina
1 Dec 2024
How a marina deals with XML sitemaps — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a chat widget that blocks the submit button. This breaks XML sitemaps for a marina.
The vendor promised a marina that XML sitemaps was handled. We verified: it was not. Trust but verify has saved more uptime than any product we have used.
We once forgot to renew XML sitemaps for a weekend project and it took down a page that a marina linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.
The vendor portal had silently rotated the key for XML sitemaps, but a marina was still using the old one. Every outbound message bounced quietly.
When we onboard a marina, the first thing we check is XML sitemaps. It tells us more about the previous provider than any sales call.
DNS propagation is not instant, but it is not magic either. We explained to a marina that the TTL on the old XML sitemaps record was 86 400 seconds — twenty-four hours.
Fixing XML sitemaps cost less than the lunch meeting where a marina decided to wait another quarter. Waiting is never free.
