Why XML sitemaps matters for a print shop

23 Mar 2024

How a print shop deals with XML sitemaps — and what usually goes wrong.

Googlebot crawls site robots.txt allow / block Sitemap page list Pages XML sitemaps Google Index ranked XML sitemaps HTTP bookmarks after…

The problem: HTTP bookmarks after a forced HTTPS move. This breaks XML sitemaps for a print shop.

You do not need a status page if you have never gone down. a print shop is on month fourteen of zero downtime, and the secret is boring: correct XML sitemaps and a host that does not oversell.

Complexity is the enemy of uptime. a print shop had three layers of proxy in front of a site that gets two hundred visits a day. We replaced it with a static page and correct XML sitemaps.

Every technical decision for a print shop comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If XML sitemaps is invisible to that person, it is working.

We document XML sitemaps in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a print shop can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.

We hand over a one-page document after every XML sitemaps job. It says what was changed, what the login is, and what to check if something feels wrong. a print shop keeps it in a drawer they actually open.
