What a driving school needs to know about A records

4 Feb 2024

How a driving school deals with A records — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits driving-school.com Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site A records query-string copies…

The problem: query-string copies of the same page. This is where A records breaks for a driving school.

We hand over a one-page document after every A records job. It says what was changed, what the login is, and what to check if something feels wrong. a driving school keeps it in a drawer they actually open.

Nobody at a driving school could remember who had configured A records. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.

We keep a playbook for A records. Step one is always the same: pull the live record with dig, compare it to what the admin panel shows, and fix the mismatch.

For a driving school, we wrote a three-line script that checks A records every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.

Six months later, a driving school asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed query-string copies of the same page had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.

When a driving school moved hosts, the outage was not the new box — it was query-string copies of the same page. We keep TTL short the week of a move, then raise it once everything is stable.
