certificate renewals for a restaurant
7 Nov 2024
How a restaurant deals with certificate renewals — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a CAA record that blocks the new CA. The certificate chain breaks for a restaurant.
Email deliverability is nobody’s favourite topic, but a restaurant lost two bookings because certificate renewals was misconfigured and replies landed in spam for a week.
If you only touch certificate renewals once a year, a dashboard is extra risk. Files, a mailbox you read, and a person who still answers will outlast any SaaS control panel.
Every CMS update brings a small chance that certificate renewals breaks. For a restaurant, we pin versions and test upgrades in a staging copy before touching production.
For a restaurant, we wrote a three-line script that checks certificate renewals every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.
Early on we tried to automate certificate renewals for a restaurant with a cron job. It ran as root, silently overwrote a manual change, and took down their mail. Lesson learned.
