CSV exports: a field note from a marina

How a marina deals with CSV exports — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: query-string copies of the same page. The CSV exports data is out of sync for a marina.

DNS propagation is not instant, but it is not magic either. We explained to a marina that the TTL on the old CSV exports record was 86 400 seconds — twenty-four hours.

For a marina, we wrote a three-line script that checks CSV exports every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.

We rotate API keys for CSV exports annually. a marina did not see the point until we showed them the access log: the old key had been used from an IP in a country nobody on their team has visited.

A phishing page copying a marina appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that CSV exports was set up correctly on the real site.

Crawlers and people want the same thing from CSV exports: one URL, a title that matches the heading, and a next link that goes somewhere real.

When we reviewed CSV exports, the DNS panel showed query-string copies of the same page. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.

We found query-string copies of the same page during a routine check of CSV exports. The site had been leaking referrer data for six weeks before anyone noticed.
