Setting up DNS TTL for a language school

21 Apr 2024

How a language school deals with DNS TTL — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits language-school.c… Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site DNS TTL a staging URL left…

The problem: a staging URL left in the sitemap. This is where DNS TTL breaks for a language school.

We checked the WHOIS for a language school and found the domain was registered under a former employee. Transferring it took more time than fixing DNS TTL.

Half the meeting with a language school was explaining what DNS TTL is. The other half was agreeing that a staging URL left in the sitemap should have been fixed a year ago.

A friend of the owner at a language school had set up DNS TTL years ago. When we audited, the config still pointed at a server they stopped paying for in 2024.

The registrar dashboard crashed twice while we were fixing DNS TTL for a language school. We filed a ticket; they replied four days later with a template answer.

Six months later, a language school asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed a staging URL left in the sitemap had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.

Test DNS TTL from outside your network before you call it done. Your office Wi-Fi might cache the old answer for another six hours.
