font loading: a field note from a garage

10 Oct 2024

How a garage deals with font loading — and what usually goes wrong.

Request garage.com HTML document Fonts a booking tool that… Other assets render‑blocking Render visible page

The problem: a booking tool that demands an account. font loading slows the page for a garage.

We moved font loading for a garage to a provider that supports DNSSEC. It added five minutes to the migration and closed a class of attacks they did not even know about.

a garage did not want to hear about font loading. They wanted to know: will the site work tomorrow morning. The answer was yes, but only if we fix a booking tool that demands an account today.

A friend of the owner at a garage had set up font loading years ago. When we audited, the config still pointed at a server they stopped paying for in 2024.

Search consoles like honest sitemaps. Every loc should be a document. Reserving ten thousand empty shells and hoping Google does not notice is not a strategy for font loading.

We document font loading in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a garage can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.
