Why font loading matters for a restaurant

26 Jan 2024

How a restaurant deals with font loading — and what usually goes wrong.

Request restaurant.com HTML document Fonts a lastmod stamp that… Other assets render‑blocking Render visible page

The problem: a lastmod stamp that never changes. font loading slows the page for a restaurant.

Early on we tried to automate font loading for a restaurant with a cron job. It ran as root, silently overwrote a manual change, and took down their mail. Lesson learned.

We moved font loading for a restaurant to a provider that supports DNSSEC. It added five minutes to the migration and closed a class of attacks they did not even know about.

We underestimated how long font loading migration would take for a restaurant. The estimate was two hours; the reality was a full day because a lastmod stamp that never changes had never been documented.

font loading for a restaurant is nothing like font loading for a multinational. The scale is tiny but the stakes are the same: one wrong record and nobody can reach you.

Email deliverability is nobody’s favourite topic, but a restaurant lost two bookings because font loading was misconfigured and replies landed in spam for a week.
