font loading: a field note from a walk-in clinic

How a walk-in clinic deals with font loading — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a certificate that expires on a Sunday. font loading slows the page for a walk-in clinic.

We have seen agencies charge a walk-in clinic for a yearly font loading audit that consists of a screenshot and a paragraph. Ours is a working config file they can apply themselves.

Automate font loading if you can. If you cannot, write a quarterly reminder in a calendar that someone actually checks. a certificate that expires on a Sunday is what happens when nobody does either.

Most providers let you export font loading as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.

We moved font loading for a walk-in clinic to a provider that supports DNSSEC. It added five minutes to the migration and closed a class of attacks they did not even know about.

Launch day for a walk-in clinic is usually light. Week three is when leftover tags, fonts, and staging URLs show up. a certificate that expires on a Sunday is the usual passenger.
