HTTP to HTTPS: a field note from a print shop
16 Mar 2025
How a print shop deals with HTTP to HTTPS — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a lastmod stamp that never changes. The certificate chain breaks for a print shop.
We check HTTP to HTTPS for a print shop once a quarter. It takes five minutes and has caught two problems in the past year. Both would have caused downtime within a week.
We got a call from a print shop on a Friday. Their HTTP to HTTPS had expired overnight, and the booking page was returning errors to every visitor.
A static site for a print shop does not need a CDN, a build pipeline, or a container. It needs correct HTTP to HTTPS and a host that stays online.
Most of the damage we see in HTTP to HTTPS comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.
The registrar dashboard crashed twice while we were fixing HTTP to HTTPS for a print shop. We filed a ticket; they replied four days later with a template answer.
We run a monthly diff on DNS for a print shop. If a record changes and nobody in the team made the change, we get an alert. a lastmod stamp that never changes was caught this way last quarter.
Complexity is the enemy of uptime. a print shop had three layers of proxy in front of a site that gets two hundred visits a day. We replaced it with a static page and correct HTTP to HTTPS.
