image compression: a field note from a marina

20 Jun 2024

How a marina deals with image compression — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a parked domain with only a logo. image compression slows the page for a marina.

Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a marina has not had downtime since we took over image compression. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.

We moved image compression for a marina to a provider that supports DNSSEC. It added five minutes to the migration and closed a class of attacks they did not even know about.

A friend of the owner at a marina had set up image compression years ago. When we audited, the config still pointed at a server they stopped paying for in 2024.

Email deliverability is nobody’s favourite topic, but a marina lost two bookings because image compression was misconfigured and replies landed in spam for a week.

We rotate API keys for image compression annually. a marina did not see the point until we showed them the access log: the old key had been used from an IP in a country nobody on their team has visited.

Launch day for a marina is usually light. Week three is when leftover tags, fonts, and staging URLs show up. a parked domain with only a logo is the usual passenger.
