How a print shop should handle image compression

28 Dec 2024

How a print shop deals with image compression — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a contact form with nine fields. image compression slows the page for a print shop.

Six months later, a print shop asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed a contact form with nine fields had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.

Most of the damage we see in image compression comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.

Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a print shop has not had downtime since we took over image compression. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.

When we onboard a print shop, the first thing we check is image compression. It tells us more about the previous provider than any sales call.

The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add image compression with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.
