Managing image compression at cabin rentals

2 Aug 2024

How cabin rentals deals with image compression — and what usually goes wrong.

Request cabin-rentals… HTML document Images a contact form with… Other assets large files Render visible page

The problem: a contact form with nine fields. image compression slows the page for cabin rentals.

Early on we tried to automate image compression for cabin rentals with a cron job. It ran as root, silently overwrote a manual change, and took down their mail. Lesson learned.

Most of the damage we see in image compression comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.

We underestimated how long image compression migration would take for cabin rentals. The estimate was two hours; the reality was a full day because a contact form with nine fields had never been documented.

If the hours on Google disagree with the site, people trust Google and then arrive angry. image compression will not fix that. The hours page will.

We checked the WHOIS for cabin rentals and found the domain was registered under a former employee. Transferring it took more time than fixing image compression.
