How a small hotel should handle registrar locks
16 Dec 2025
How a small hotel deals with registrar locks — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a 404 that still returns 200. This is where registrar locks breaks for a small hotel.
The registrar dashboard crashed twice while we were fixing registrar locks for a small hotel. We filed a ticket; they replied four days later with a template answer.
Half the meeting with a small hotel was explaining what registrar locks is. The other half was agreeing that a 404 that still returns 200 should have been fixed a year ago.
When we reviewed registrar locks, the DNS panel showed a 404 that still returns 200. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.
The worst registrar locks failure we have seen at a small hotel was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.
Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a small hotel has not had downtime since we took over registrar locks. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.
When a small hotel moved hosts, the outage was not the new box — it was a 404 that still returns 200. We keep TTL short the week of a move, then raise it once everything is stable.
