Setting up robots.txt for a small hotel
27 Oct 2025
How a small hotel deals with robots.txt — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: three unused font weights. This breaks robots.txt for a small hotel.
Most providers let you export robots.txt as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.
HTTPS is table stakes, but robots.txt is where trust actually lives for a small hotel. A padlock with a misconfigured record behind it is decoration, not security.
Instead of migrating robots.txt all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.
When a small hotel asked for a quote on robots.txt, we sent a one-paragraph email instead of a slide deck. They signed the same day.
Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a small hotel has not had downtime since we took over robots.txt. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.
