Setting up SPF for a small hotel
12 Sep 2024
How a small hotel deals with SPF — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a certificate that expires on a Sunday. The SPF check fails for a small hotel.
We got a call from a small hotel on a Friday. Their SPF had expired overnight, and the booking page was returning errors to every visitor.
The job started when a small hotel realised their SPF had been wrong for months. Nobody noticed because the site still loaded.
a small hotel did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.
We solved SPF for a small hotel by moving it behind a reverse proxy. The old configuration stayed live as a fallback for forty-eight hours, then we pulled it.
We rotate API keys for SPF annually. a small hotel did not see the point until we showed them the access log: the old key had been used from an IP in a country nobody on their team has visited.
Email deliverability is nobody’s favourite topic, but a small hotel lost two bookings because SPF was misconfigured and replies landed in spam for a week.
