A practical look at SPF for cabin rentals

How cabin rentals deals with SPF — and what usually goes wrong.

Sender outbound email DNS lookup SPF SPF a lastmod stamp that… Mail server cabin-rentals.c… Inbox delivered

The problem: a lastmod stamp that never changes. The SPF check fails for cabin rentals.

For cabin rentals, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for SPF.

We do not start with a platform when handling SPF. We write down who types what, who gets the mail, and what must not get lost. That list is always shorter than a vendor pitch deck.

We once forgot to renew SPF for a weekend project and it took down a page that cabin rentals linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.

When we reviewed SPF, the DNS panel showed a lastmod stamp that never changes. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.

Nobody at cabin rentals could remember who had configured SPF. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.

We checked the WHOIS for cabin rentals and found the domain was registered under a former employee. Transferring it took more time than fixing SPF.
