Setting up SPF for a language school

2 Apr 2025

How a language school deals with SPF — and what usually goes wrong.

Sender outbound email DNS lookup SPF SPF a lastmod stamp that… Mail server language-school… Inbox delivered

The problem: a lastmod stamp that never changes. The SPF check fails for a language school.

Related work on this site follows the same principle: one job, a real inbox, no theatre. a language school did not need four analytics dashboards to know that Tuesdays are slow.

Instead of migrating SPF all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.

Most of the damage we see in SPF comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.

We check SPF for a language school once a quarter. It takes five minutes and has caught two problems in the past year. Both would have caused downtime within a week.

Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a language school has not had downtime since we took over SPF. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.

Email deliverability is nobody’s favourite topic, but a language school lost two bookings because SPF was misconfigured and replies landed in spam for a week.

a language school asked us to look at SPF after a customer screenshot showed a browser warning. The fix took eleven minutes; finding the cause took two hours.
