Setting up static hosting for a hardware store

4 May 2024

How a hardware store deals with static hosting — and what usually goes wrong.

Site files HTML, CSS, images Deploy static hosting Host hardware-store.… Visitor loads page static hosting three unused font…

The problem: three unused font weights. This breaks static hosting for a hardware store.

For a hardware store, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for static hosting.

Six months later, a hardware store asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed three unused font weights had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.

Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a hardware store has not had downtime since we took over static hosting. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.

We check static hosting for a hardware store once a quarter. It takes five minutes and has caught two problems in the past year. Both would have caused downtime within a week.

The hosting bill for a hardware store is twelve dollars a month. Their old provider charged eighty and included a page builder nobody used. static hosting was broken on both plans.

After the move, three unused font weights broke search indexing for a hardware store. Google kept serving the old pages for another nineteen days.

When a hardware store asked for a quote on static hosting, we sent a one-paragraph email instead of a slide deck. They signed the same day.
