static hosting for a marina
28 Oct 2024
How a marina deals with static hosting — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a plugin login nobody has used since March. This breaks static hosting for a marina.
We once forgot to renew static hosting for a weekend project and it took down a page that a marina linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.
If the hours on Google disagree with the site, people trust Google and then arrive angry. static hosting will not fix that. The hours page will.
Six months later, a marina asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed a plugin login nobody has used since March had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.
Most of the damage we see in static hosting comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.
a marina did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.
Instead of migrating static hosting all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.
The most expensive outage for a marina was not a hack — it was a plugin login nobody has used since March. Nobody attacked anything. The config just drifted.
