How a marina should handle TLS certificates
24 May 2024
How a marina deals with TLS certificates — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: identical titles on every inner page. The certificate chain breaks for a marina.
The hosting bill for a marina is twelve dollars a month. Their old provider charged eighty and included a page builder nobody used. TLS certificates was broken on both plans.
The chain of trust for TLS certificates starts at the registrar. If the registrar account uses an email nobody reads, every downstream fix is temporary.
Most of the damage we see in TLS certificates comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.
When a marina moved hosts, the outage was not the new box — it was identical titles on every inner page. We keep TTL short the week of a move, then raise it once everything is stable.
After fixing TLS certificates, we added a monitoring alert. If the record changes or the certificate approaches expiry, both we and a marina get an email. No surprises.
