Why TLS certificates matters for a print shop

2 Jul 2024

How a print shop deals with TLS certificates — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser requests page print-shop.com TLS certificates Certificate a form that emails a… Certificate Authority issues cert

The problem: a form that emails a shared inbox. The certificate chain breaks for a print shop.

We once forgot to renew TLS certificates for a weekend project and it took down a page that a print shop linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.

Fixing TLS certificates cost less than the lunch meeting where a print shop decided to wait another quarter. Waiting is never free.

Most of the damage we see in TLS certificates comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.

a print shop did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.

A phishing page copying a print shop appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that TLS certificates was set up correctly on the real site.

Managed hosting handles TLS certificates automatically — until it does not. a print shop learned this when their provider migrated servers and a form that emails a shared inbox disappeared silently.

The worst TLS certificates failure we have seen at a print shop was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.
