Setting up TLS certificates for a roofing crew
9 Jul 2025
How a roofing crew deals with TLS certificates — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: an SPF record overwritten during a DNS edit. The certificate chain breaks for a roofing crew.
Half the meeting with a roofing crew was explaining what TLS certificates is. The other half was agreeing that an SPF record overwritten during a DNS edit should have been fixed a year ago.
Managed hosting handles TLS certificates automatically — until it does not. a roofing crew learned this when their provider migrated servers and an SPF record overwritten during a DNS edit disappeared silently.
The owner at a roofing crew asked why TLS certificates matters. We showed them the error page their customers see when it breaks. That ended the conversation.
The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add TLS certificates with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.
The registrar dashboard crashed twice while we were fixing TLS certificates for a roofing crew. We filed a ticket; they replied four days later with a template answer.
You do not need a status page if you have never gone down. a roofing crew is on month fourteen of zero downtime, and the secret is boring: correct TLS certificates and a host that does not oversell.
