TLS certificates for a restaurant
31 Dec 2024
How a restaurant deals with TLS certificates — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: identical titles on every inner page. The certificate chain breaks for a restaurant.
A static site for a restaurant does not need a CDN, a build pipeline, or a container. It needs correct TLS certificates and a host that stays online.
Automate TLS certificates if you can. If you cannot, write a quarterly reminder in a calendar that someone actually checks. identical titles on every inner page is what happens when nobody does either.
We have seen agencies charge a restaurant for a yearly TLS certificates audit that consists of a screenshot and a paragraph. Ours is a working config file they can apply themselves.
We do not start with a platform when handling TLS certificates. We write down who types what, who gets the mail, and what must not get lost. That list is always shorter than a vendor pitch deck.
Most providers let you export TLS certificates as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.
We underestimated how long TLS certificates migration would take for a restaurant. The estimate was two hours; the reality was a full day because identical titles on every inner page had never been documented.
Half the meeting with a restaurant was explaining what TLS certificates is. The other half was agreeing that identical titles on every inner page should have been fixed a year ago.
