What a marina needs to know about 404 pages

30 Jul 2024

How a marina deals with 404 pages — and what usually goes wrong.

Googlebot crawls site robots.txt allow / block Sitemap page list Pages 404 pages Google Index ranked 404 pages a registrar login…

The problem: a registrar login nobody wrote down. This breaks 404 pages for a marina.

Instead of migrating 404 pages all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.

Nobody at a marina could remember who had configured 404 pages. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.

When we reviewed 404 pages, the DNS panel showed a registrar login nobody wrote down. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.

The real issue was not 404 pages itself — it was a registrar login nobody wrote down. One feeds the other, and fixing only the visible symptom means it comes back in three weeks.

The owner at a marina asked why 404 pages matters. We showed them the error page their customers see when it breaks. That ended the conversation.
