Setting up 404 pages for a veterinary clinic
22 Aug 2024
How a veterinary clinic deals with 404 pages — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a registrar login nobody wrote down. This breaks 404 pages for a veterinary clinic.
The worst 404 pages failure we have seen at a veterinary clinic was invisible for eight months. The backup existed but had never been tested, and the data inside was three migrations old.
A free certificate and a correct 404 pages record will do more for a veterinary clinic than a redesign that ships with a registrar login nobody wrote down still in place.
WordPress can handle 404 pages with a plugin. But the plugin adds JavaScript, a dashboard, and a support ticket when it conflicts with the next update. We wrote four lines of config instead.
We keep a playbook for 404 pages. Step one is always the same: pull the live record with dig, compare it to what the admin panel shows, and fix the mismatch.
We told a veterinary clinic that a registrar login nobody wrote down was a ticking clock. They agreed to fix it the same week — which is rare. Most clients wait until it actually detonates.
