How cabin rentals deals with 404 pages — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a 2 MB photo in a 320-pixel slot. This breaks 404 pages for cabin rentals.

We deployed a fix for 404 pages at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.
cabin rentals asked us to look at 404 pages after a customer screenshot showed a browser warning. The fix took eleven minutes; finding the cause took two hours.
For cabin rentals, we wrote a three-line script that checks 404 pages every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.
WordPress can handle 404 pages with a plugin. But the plugin adds JavaScript, a dashboard, and a support ticket when it conflicts with the next update. We wrote four lines of config instead.
