What a plant nursery needs to know about backups

3 Feb 2025

How a plant nursery deals with backups — and what usually goes wrong.

Site files HTML, CSS, images Deploy backups Host plant-nursery.c… Visitor loads page backups a plugin login…

The problem: a plugin login nobody has used since March. This breaks backups for a plant nursery.

a plant nursery did not need a portal. They needed a page that said who they are, what they do, and a phone number that somebody picks up before the fifth ring.

Early on we tried to automate backups for a plant nursery with a cron job. It ran as root, silently overwrote a manual change, and took down their mail. Lesson learned.

The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add backups with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.

For a plant nursery, we wrote a three-line script that checks backups every morning and emails the owner if anything changes. Total cost: zero.

A free certificate and a correct backups record will do more for a plant nursery than a redesign that ships with a plugin login nobody has used since March still in place.
