backups for a small hotel

17 Jul 2024

How a small hotel deals with backups — and what usually goes wrong.

Site files HTML, CSS, images Deploy backups Host small-hotel.com Visitor loads page backups a plugin login…

The problem: a plugin login nobody has used since March. This breaks backups for a small hotel.

When we onboard a small hotel, the first thing we check is backups. It tells us more about the previous provider than any sales call.

HTTPS is table stakes, but backups is where trust actually lives for a small hotel. A padlock with a misconfigured record behind it is decoration, not security.

We document backups in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a small hotel can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.

Every technical decision for a small hotel comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If backups is invisible to that person, it is working.

We deployed a fix for backups at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.

Six months later, a small hotel asked us to look at something unrelated. While we were in the panel, we noticed a plugin login nobody has used since March had crept back. We fixed it before it caused trouble.
