A practical look at backups for a marina
29 Aug 2026
How a marina deals with backups — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: an inbox shared between the office and the webmaster. This breaks backups for a marina.
Fixing backups cost less than the lunch meeting where a marina decided to wait another quarter. Waiting is never free.
Test backups from outside your network before you call it done. Your office Wi-Fi might cache the old answer for another six hours.
WordPress can handle backups with a plugin. But the plugin adds JavaScript, a dashboard, and a support ticket when it conflicts with the next update. We wrote four lines of config instead.
Most of the damage we see in backups comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.
We run a monthly diff on DNS for a marina. If a record changes and nobody in the team made the change, we get an alert. an inbox shared between the office and the webmaster was caught this way last quarter.
