Why CAA records matters for a garage

29 Jun 2024

How a garage deals with CAA records — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits garage.com Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site CAA records a mailbox that still…

The problem: a mailbox that still points at the old host. This is where CAA records breaks for a garage.

We document CAA records in a shared spreadsheet. It is not glamorous, but a garage can open it on their phone at midnight if something breaks.

A free certificate and a correct CAA records record will do more for a garage than a redesign that ships with a mailbox that still points at the old host still in place.

WordPress can handle CAA records with a plugin. But the plugin adds JavaScript, a dashboard, and a support ticket when it conflicts with the next update. We wrote four lines of config instead.

We moved CAA records for a garage to a provider that supports DNSSEC. It added five minutes to the migration and closed a class of attacks they did not even know about.

We quoted a garage half what the other firm did because we did not propose features they did not ask for. The scope was CAA records, not a rebrand.

For a garage, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for CAA records.

We checked the WHOIS for a garage and found the domain was registered under a former employee. Transferring it took more time than fixing CAA records.
