certificate renewals: a field note from a driving school

6 Nov 2025

How a driving school deals with certificate renewals — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser requests page driving-school.com certificate renewals Certificate a 2 MB photo in a… Certificate Authority issues cert

The problem: a 2 MB photo in a 320-pixel slot. The certificate chain breaks for a driving school.

Most providers let you export certificate renewals as a zone file. We keep one in version control for every client. If the hosting vanishes, the zone file rebuilds the domain in minutes.

The real issue was not certificate renewals itself — it was a 2 MB photo in a 320-pixel slot. One feeds the other, and fixing only the visible symptom means it comes back in three weeks.

WordPress can handle certificate renewals with a plugin. But the plugin adds JavaScript, a dashboard, and a support ticket when it conflicts with the next update. We wrote four lines of config instead.

Most of the damage we see in certificate renewals comes from doing too much. A single correct record beats three that were supposed to be clever.

Early on we tried to automate certificate renewals for a driving school with a cron job. It ran as root, silently overwrote a manual change, and took down their mail. Lesson learned.

We once forgot to renew certificate renewals for a weekend project and it took down a page that a driving school linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.

Fixing certificate renewals cost less than the lunch meeting where a driving school decided to wait another quarter. Waiting is never free.
