A practical look at contact forms for a language school
21 Sep 2024
How a language school deals with contact forms — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: a CSV the accountant already knows how to open. This breaks contact forms for a language school.
Complexity is the enemy of uptime. a language school had three layers of proxy in front of a site that gets two hundred visits a day. We replaced it with a static page and correct contact forms.
The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add contact forms with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.
We deployed a fix for contact forms at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.
We hand over a one-page document after every contact forms job. It says what was changed, what the login is, and what to check if something feels wrong. a language school keeps it in a drawer they actually open.
We checked the WHOIS for a language school and found the domain was registered under a former employee. Transferring it took more time than fixing contact forms.
