Why DKIM matters for a print shop

8 Dec 2024

How a print shop deals with DKIM — and what usually goes wrong.

The problem: a registrar login nobody wrote down. The DKIM check fails for a print shop.

You do not need a status page if you have never gone down. a print shop is on month fourteen of zero downtime, and the secret is boring: correct DKIM and a host that does not oversell.

When a print shop moved hosts, the outage was not the new box — it was a registrar login nobody wrote down. We keep TTL short the week of a move, then raise it once everything is stable.

Nobody at a print shop could remember who had configured DKIM. The credentials were in a text file inside a folder called OLD STUFF on a shared drive.

When a print shop asked for a quote on DKIM, we sent a one-paragraph email instead of a slide deck. They signed the same day.

We deployed a fix for DKIM at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.

If you only touch DKIM once a year, a dashboard is extra risk. Files, a mailbox you read, and a person who still answers will outlast any SaaS control panel.
