Managing DMARC at a marina

10 Nov 2024

How a marina deals with DMARC — and what usually goes wrong.

Sender outbound email DNS lookup DMARC DMARC a tag manager… Mail server marina.com Inbox delivered

The problem: a tag manager container with leftover pixels. The DMARC check fails for a marina.

Complexity is the enemy of uptime. a marina had three layers of proxy in front of a site that gets two hundred visits a day. We replaced it with a static page and correct DMARC.

Related work on this site follows the same principle: one job, a real inbox, no theatre. a marina did not need four analytics dashboards to know that Tuesdays are slow.

We deployed a fix for DMARC at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.

A phishing page copying a marina appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that DMARC was set up correctly on the real site.

Big agencies solve DMARC with a team. We solve it with a checklist and a dig command. The result is the same; the invoice is shorter.

The registrar dashboard crashed twice while we were fixing DMARC for a marina. We filed a ticket; they replied four days later with a template answer.

A static site for a marina does not need a CDN, a build pipeline, or a container. It needs correct DMARC and a host that stays online.
