What a small hotel needs to know about DMARC

4 Nov 2025

How a small hotel deals with DMARC — and what usually goes wrong.

Sender outbound email DNS lookup DMARC DMARC HTTP bookmarks after… Mail server small-hotel.com Inbox delivered

The problem: HTTP bookmarks after a forced HTTPS move. The DMARC check fails for a small hotel.

For a small hotel, the boring path won: HTTPS, a backup that we have restored once on purpose, and a calendar reminder for DMARC.

A phishing page copying a small hotel appeared last year. The only reason their customers could tell it apart was that DMARC was set up correctly on the real site.

The registrar dashboard crashed twice while we were fixing DMARC for a small hotel. We filed a ticket; they replied four days later with a template answer.

Two-factor on the registrar account is the single highest-value thing we do for a small hotel when managing DMARC. Everything else can be rebuilt; a stolen domain cannot.

Every technical decision for a small hotel comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If DMARC is invisible to that person, it is working.

We once forgot to renew DMARC for a weekend project and it took down a page that a small hotel linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.

We do not start with a platform when handling DMARC. We write down who types what, who gets the mail, and what must not get lost. That list is always shorter than a vendor pitch deck.
