A practical look at DMARC for a veterinary clinic

5 Sep 2024

How a veterinary clinic deals with DMARC — and what usually goes wrong.

Sender outbound email DNS lookup DMARC DMARC a tag manager… Mail server veterinary-clin… Inbox delivered

The problem: a tag manager container with leftover pixels. The DMARC check fails for a veterinary clinic.

Two-factor on the registrar account is the single highest-value thing we do for a veterinary clinic when managing DMARC. Everything else can be rebuilt; a stolen domain cannot.

We keep a playbook for DMARC. Step one is always the same: pull the live record with dig, compare it to what the admin panel shows, and fix the mismatch.

a veterinary clinic asked us to look at DMARC after a customer screenshot showed a browser warning. The fix took eleven minutes; finding the cause took two hours.

The best DMARC setup is the one nobody has to think about. For a veterinary clinic, that means auto-renew, auto-redirect, and a monitoring ping every four hours.

A static site for a veterinary clinic does not need a CDN, a build pipeline, or a container. It needs correct DMARC and a host that stays online.

When we reviewed DMARC, the DNS panel showed a tag manager container with leftover pixels. Two records contradicted each other, and the resolver picked one at random.
