Managing DMARC at a roofing crew

26 Nov 2024

How a roofing crew deals with DMARC — and what usually goes wrong.

Sender outbound email DNS lookup DMARC DMARC HTTP bookmarks after… Mail server roofing-crew.com Inbox delivered

The problem: HTTP bookmarks after a forced HTTPS move. The DMARC check fails for a roofing crew.

The owner at a roofing crew asked why DMARC matters. We showed them the error page their customers see when it breaks. That ended the conversation.

The fix was to delete the old entry, wait for TTL to expire, and re-add DMARC with the correct value. We scheduled it for 3 AM so nobody lost traffic.

HTTPS is table stakes, but DMARC is where trust actually lives for a roofing crew. A padlock with a misconfigured record behind it is decoration, not security.

We deployed a fix for DMARC at 5 PM on a Friday. It worked, but if it had not, we would have had no one available. We no longer push to production after Thursday noon.

Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a roofing crew has not had downtime since we took over DMARC. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.

If the hours on Google disagree with the site, people trust Google and then arrive angry. DMARC will not fix that. The hours page will.
