Setting up DMARC for a garage
9 Sep 2024
How a garage deals with DMARC — and what usually goes wrong.
The problem: HTTP bookmarks after a forced HTTPS move. The DMARC check fails for a garage.
We once forgot to renew DMARC for a weekend project and it took down a page that a garage linked to from a print flyer. We now set auto-renew on everything.
Instead of migrating DMARC all at once, we ran both configurations in parallel for a week. The switch happened on a Wednesday morning — the quietest traffic window.
We rotate API keys for DMARC annually. a garage did not see the point until we showed them the access log: the old key had been used from an IP in a country nobody on their team has visited.
A static site for a garage does not need a CDN, a build pipeline, or a container. It needs correct DMARC and a host that stays online.
Every technical decision for a garage comes back to one question: does this help the person looking at the site right now? If DMARC is invisible to that person, it is working.
We hand over a one-page document after every DMARC job. It says what was changed, what the login is, and what to check if something feels wrong. a garage keeps it in a drawer they actually open.
a garage asked us to look at DMARC after a customer screenshot showed a browser warning. The fix took eleven minutes; finding the cause took two hours.
