What a bakery needs to know about DNS TTL

27 Jun 2024

How a bakery deals with DNS TTL — and what usually goes wrong.

Browser visits bakery.com Registrar domain owner Nameserver DNS records Host serves site DNS TTL a staging URL left…

The problem: a staging URL left in the sitemap. This is where DNS TTL breaks for a bakery.

Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is the reason a bakery has not had downtime since we took over DNS TTL. The invoice is small and the peace of mind is large.

There is a difference between a site that loads and a site that works. DNS TTL is part of the second category for a bakery.

The real issue was not DNS TTL itself — it was a staging URL left in the sitemap. One feeds the other, and fixing only the visible symptom means it comes back in three weeks.

Search consoles like honest sitemaps. Every loc should be a document. Reserving ten thousand empty shells and hoping Google does not notice is not a strategy for DNS TTL.

The job started when a bakery realised their DNS TTL had been wrong for months. Nobody noticed because the site still loaded.
